The Hukou Waterfall is naturally formed when water of middle reaches of the Yellow River flows through Jinxia Grand Canyon. As the second largest one in China, only to the Huangguoshu Waterfall in Guizhou Province, it has a width of 30 meters and is as deep as 50 meters with the largest waterfall covering 30,000 square meters. The soaring water of the Yellow River is narrowed from over 400 meters to over 50 meters, making the fall even more violent during the 40 meters’ drop. This picture reminds one of water being poured out of a huge kettle, from which comes the name of Hukou (Mouth of Kettle) Waterfall. As a notable scenic spot in Shanxi Province, Hukou Waterfall, which covers an area of about 100 square kilometers, was listed as National Key Scenic Spot in 1988 and now is graded as a 4A spot. 3,000 meters down the waterfall is a unique boulder called “Mengmeng Mount.” The waterfall is divided into two with water falling through both sides of the boulder and then joining together again. In 1991, Hukou Waterfall was named one of the “40 Best” national scenic spots. It has a great potential for further development with numerous spots among which are Mengmeng Moon Night, Divine Ox Safeguarding the River, and many others. Since 1994, the Hukou Waterfall Month has been held annually, during which Asia Flying-man Ke Shouliang and Jixian Flying-man Zhu Zhaohui have driven car and motorbike respectively across the Yellow River successfully. Since then Hukou scenic spot has been enjoying the spotlight of tourists.
