Beijing travel review & recommendations

Travel here because if your coming to China you will probably fly in here or at least pass through. Even though its the capital there really is a lot to see. The subway system running through the city of 20 million displayed in both English and Mandarin and is surprising easily to navigate to nearly all areas (its also only 30 cents a ticket).

We got off the metro at Qianmen station in central Beijing which is very near Tianmen square and a few temples/pagodas and the accompanying outdoor plazas. Beijing is much bigger and more spread out (sprawling) than I thought (nothing like Hong Kong) so walking around is not advisable because there is just so much ground to cover. Take the metro first and then walk wherever you need to get afterwards.

The hostel we stayed in is of the same name as the metro stop (Qianmen) and is brand new (not in LP) and pretty well appointed. We had a triple room for like 7 dollars a night and although its shared restroom facilities it was still a good place to hang out. There is a TV and book room upstairs with a bunch of DVDs and the food and beer downstairs and tasty and very reasonable. There is also an awesome shoe box sized restaurant across the street called ''Happy Customer Easy Meal" make sure you try the lamb with cumin, cilantro and onions, mmm yum.

There are tons of things to see in and outside of the city, even besides the great wall. If you have some energy make sure you do the 10km hike from the Simati section of the GW. It was nearly deserted when we were there with minimal touts and hustlers and a fantastic view of the wall in every direction. The summer Palace and the forbidden city are also very much worth doing and it is easy and cheap to keep busy there for at least a week as we did.

Not everyone speaks English here so you may need to brush up on your Chinglish before you go. Check the literal translations there on everything from street signs to menu options.
Have fun!
