Yangshuo travel review & recommendations

What a gorgeous country China is!!! There is an initial shock of the enormity of it all (the number of people and the development everywhere you look!!!!). You can cross from Vietnam, travelling straight through to Guillin, and travel via a bus to Yangshuo, a town surrounded by huge karst. There are hundreds of tourists walking the streets, mainly Chinese, giving Yangshuo a real buzz.

Hiring bikes is popular for a full day along the Yulong Jiang. Off the main road you most likely will only see one or two other tourists which is a surprise considering the amount of tourists swarming the town centre. Riding through paddy fields, tiny mud brick villages with buffalo and locals in conical hats gives you a great sense of the place. We were lucky enough to have one of the local farmers offer to ferry us and our bikes across the river, and ended up singing traditional Chinese folk songs to keep us amused! Looking up at the huge mountains it was exactly what I imagined rural China to be, really beautiful encounter.

Back on dry land we continued through villages and fields, stopping at Dragon Bridge, an old stone bridge just outside the town of Baisha. All the locals were asleep making for some great photo opportunities!

It was a long hot day, the butts and legs are a bit sore but the trip was definitely worth the effort. We have had nothing but genuine kindness from the locals, huge smiles and many many requests for photos from the Chinese tourists (it must be Dave's blonde hair, or maybe my funny looking head).

We have also developed a taste for the local cuisine, Guillin glutinous noodles which at 6 yuan a bowl is the best way to start the day!
